Rumor: Windows 9 'Threshold' expected in April 2015

Microsoft is reportedly targeting an April 2015 launch for the operating system sequel to Windows 8.1, codenamed 'Threshold'. According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft is trying to put the less-than-fantastic launch of Windows 8.1 behind it by calling the OS Windows 9, and although it hasn't entered the development phase, the company has already started planning ahead.

In April 2014, which is just a few months away, Microsoft will hold its annual BUILD conference and it's rumored that the company's long term vision will be presented at the show. This will include the first look at what Microsoft has planned for Windows 9, alongside more stuff on Windows Phone and Xbox.

Addressing the criticisms surrounding Windows 8 will be a major focus of Windows 9, and the OS is expected to bring "Metro 2.0", a major update to the design language used from Windows 8 onwards set to fix issues. As previously reported, this update may introduce a feature that allows Metro-style applications to be run on the desktop as floating windows, rather than just full-screen apps.

The Start menu may also return in Windows 9 'Threshold', or even earlier in a second 'Update 2' for Windows 8.1. 'Threshold' updates should also come to Windows Phone and Xbox, but it won't necessarily bring the eventual merge of Windows RT and Windows Phone.

Currently Microsoft is working on 'Update 1' for Windows 8.1, which is essentially a free service pack that will likely debut in April 2014 alongside Windows Phone 8.1. The development of both OSes is nearing completion, so it shouldn't be too long before we'll get our hands on updates for Microsoft's main platforms.

12 Back-to-School Cyber-Security Tips

Having a personal computer is no longer a luxury for college students—it's become a necessity. Most students choose laptops, so they can take notes in class or study outside under the trees. And most of those laptops aren't protected nearly as well as they should be.
In addition, the student life poses some unique challenges. I feel fairly sure no stranger is going to wander into my home office, but a student is immediately saddled with one or more wildcards in the form of roommates. Those roommates, their friends, and just about anybody else, may wander in and out of your dorm room; it's far from ideal for security.
If your school PC is lost or stolen, you won't just lose your lecture notes from Parapsychology 101. You've almost certainly stored personal information as well, data that a thief could use against you. Here are a dozen tips to help you stay secure at school.

1. Lock It Down.Many laptops and other small electronic devices include a slot designed to accept a special cable lock. Wrap the cable around something massive, insert the lock into the device, and turn the key or spin the combination. A determined thief could probably wrest the device loose, but only at the expense of seriously damaging the case. There are also locks that attach to a common port such as the video output or parallel port.

2. Password-Protect It. Yes, it's awfully convenient to just turn on your computer and have it boot straight to the desktop—convenient, but not safe. You absolutely must password-protect your user account, and disable the Guest account if it's not already disabled. Also, dig into the Power settings in Control Panel and set your computer to require a password when it wakes up from the sleep state. If you have to step away from your computer, press Windows+L to lock it.

3. Protect Your Email. Many schools issue all students a school-specific email address, usually a standard POP3 account. It's a snap to set your email client so it logs in automatically, without requesting the password each time. However, if you ever leave your computer turned on but unattended, anyone could log in and read your email, or send scandalous messages. You'll be safer if you set your email client to require the password every time.

4. Manage Your Passwords. Like anyone else, students connect with many, many secure sites, each of which demands a password. The only reasonable way to use a unique, strong password for each site is to engage the help of a password manager utility. Install it, check and change any weak passwords, and set it to automatically log out after a short period of inactivity.

5. Don't Over-Share, Part 1. A friend asks, "Hey, can I use your password to log in and look something up?" Requests like this are all too common, and the correct response is very simple—just say no. Don't share your login credentials with anybody. If you want to be nice, offer to log in yourself and look up whatever your friend was seeking.

6. Don't Over-Share, Part 2. Configure your social media accounts so that only your friends can see your posts, and limit the amount of personal profile information that's publicly visible. Oh, and those pictures from the frat's keg party? Do yourself a favor and just don't post those at all. If someone else does so, untag yourself at the very least. You'll thank yourself years later when you've graduated and started looking for a job.

7. Keep Malware Out. The archetypical starving student doesn't have any cash to spare. Downloading pirated software and tunes is one way to save money, but doing so can expose you to malware. In fact, you can run into malicious code even on perfectly legitimate sites, through "poisoned" advertising links. The best free antivirus tools are better than many of their commercial competitors, so there's no excuse for going without antivirus protection. PCMag's Editors' Choice products for free antivirus are AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2013 and Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 10.5.

8. Don't Be Fooled. Got a text or email message promising quick bucks for working at home? Or an offer to share in a big reward, for a small initial investment? Don't believe everything you read, especially in your Inbox. Some scammers see students as easy marks; it's your job to prove them wrong. Watch out for phishing messages pretending to come from your bank, or even from your university. If you're not sure whether a message is valid, navigate to the site yourself and check it out, or phone the relevant department; don't click any links.

9. Beware Insecure Networks. Your school likely doesn't have a big IT budget, and what they do have is probably devoted to fixing outages. Security? They haven't had time to think about it. Whether you're using the school's network, or free WiFi in a coffeeshop, your connection could possibly be open to snooping by other users. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) utility will both protect your connection and let you surf anonymously. There are plenty of good free VPN clients to choose from.

10. Get It Back. It just takes an instant of inattention to leave your laptop in a lecture hall. You may be careful to lock your dorm room door, but if your roommate is a flake, a thief could easily make off with your PC while you're both out. Consider investing in a little protection, in the form of anti-theft software. Our Editors' Choice in this category is LoJack for Laptops by Absolute Software, which can still function even if the thief formats or swaps out the hard drive. Note, too, that security mega-suite Bitdefender Total Security (2014) has an anti-theft component built in, along with just about every other security feature you can imagine.

11. Secure Your Phone. That smartphone you carry around in your pocket is a more powerful computer than early-generation PCs, and it's just crammed with contacts, photos, and other personal data. You absolutely must set up a lock screen using a PIN, swipe code, facial recognition, or whatever your particular phone supports. Other security measures such as password management, VPN connection, and anti-theft are just as important for your phone as for a laptop.

12. Cut Your Losses. I learned a handy trick from a friend of mine who just adored the club scene. Before she headed out to party, she'd lock away her smartphone and bring a cheap burner phone instead. If the phone took a dive while a friend was holding her hair, it wouldn't be a great loss. For those who like to party hearty after a week of grueling study, this tip can be a lifesaver.

Whether you're a student or not, a good dose of common sense will definitely help you stay secure. Keep your programs up to date, run security software, don't click suspicious links, and don't believe offers that are too good to be true. Create a bootable CD or DVD with or without floppy

With the CD-ROM available on almost every computer nowaday, floppy drives become a history. However, for those who find computers a hobby, might run into a situation when they need to create a bootable CD that works just like the old floppy disk. Unfortunately, to do this, you still need a floppy drive to read your bootup floppy disk. Wait, the good news is, you can just down load a bootable ISO image and burn it to a CD. And even better.
The information on this article will guide you step-by-step how to create a bootable CD/DVD, either using a bootup floppy disk or a boot image file. You will end up having a bootable CD or DVD, with CD-ROM driver supported, that could startup your PC and bring up the command prompt. This is going to be a good starting point, then you can run other utilities such as hard drive ghost, etc..
Many current CD/DVD burning software support the bootable feature. If you already have your favorite burning software, look around to find the bootable option. For this article, I will use the steps and sample screen-shots with the burning tool called Nero.
 This boot image is Windows-98 based, which means it uses the Windows 98 bootup sequence, which should do what we need. You can also download different boot disk images from the internet. I've found bootdisk.com has a very good collection.
I assume that you already have Nero installed. Also, it is highly recommended to use a rewritable disc so you can redo the process if you have to.

1. Launch Nero Burning ROM
2. At the New Compilation Window, select "CD" from the drop-down menu and select "CD-ROM (Boot)" for CD, (or select "DVD" and "DVD-ROM (Boot)" for DVD)
   
   
   
   
   
3. If you use a bootup floppy disk, insert the floppy disk and select "Bootable logical drive..."
   
   
   
4. If you use an image file, select "Image File" then click "Browse" to browse to the image.
   
   At the "Open" Window, browse to the location where you saved the boot image and choose the image you wish to use and click "Open" (you might need to change the "Files of type" to "All Files" in order to see files with different extensions.)
   
   
   
5. Click "New" at the New Compilation Window.
6. Nero New Compilation Window disappears and Nero brings up its main screen where you can add more files to the CD/DVD if you wish. For example, adding a "ghost" folder with the file "ghost.exe" as follows.
   Once you're done adding all the files you wish to, click on the "Burn" icon.

Configuring a Windows 8 Virtual Machine

With the launch of Windows 8's Consumer Preview, you're probably itching to spend some quality time with Microsoft's latest operating system. Although you may have already downloaded the ISO, we bet some of you haven't decided how you're going to install it.

Considering you've just met, we assume most of you aren't ready to clear a dresser drawer for Windows 8. Overwriting your current stable OS with pre-release code could be a recipe for disaster, though at least one TechSpot staffer is taking the plunge.

Dual booting is popular, but in our experience, rebooting into a separate environment is more trouble than it's worth when you're just trying to sample beta (err, "preview") software. The same could be said for using the OS on a secondary PC near your primary rig.

Fortunately, running Windows 8 in a virtual machine solves all that: it won't remove your current OS, you can access it anytime you want without rebooting and it doesn't require any extra hardware. What's more, the test OS can be deleted in only a few mouse clicks.

This write-up won't have much to offer folks experienced with virtual machines, but many users are still intimidated by them. We hope to demystify the process with a guide that installs a fully functional, commitment-free copy of Windows 8 inside your main OS.

So, what do I need?

Not much! You probably want 1-2GB of RAM and 20-30GB of storage allocated to the Windows 8 VM. You need a processor that supports virtualization (basically any major chip from Intel or AMD released since 2006). In other words, you need a semi-modern PC.

Accompanying said hardware, you need to download a copy of Windows 8 (either 32-bit or 64-bit will work fine, but the former calls for half the RAM and 4GB less storage). You also need virtualization software. We're using VirtualBox, a free solution from Oracle.

Got it. Let's do this!

Honestly, by the time you're done, you'll probably wonder why you even consulted a walkthrough. Configuring a basic virtual machine is a lot easier than it might seem if you've never done it. Start by clicking New in VirtualBox and click Next on the first prompt.

You'll be asked to name your virtual machine. The name is purely for identification purposes, so you know exactly what the machine is later on. We're using Windows 8 CP 64-bit. You also have to choose the OS you're installing (hint: Windows 8 or Windows 8 64-bit).

The following screen will ask you to set a RAM size. As a minimum, Microsoft recommends 1GB for the 32-bit version and 2GB for 64-bit. We're heeding that advice, but if you want to try scraping by with less, you can always reallocate more memory to the VM later.

Assuming this is your first VM you'll have to choose "Create new hard disk" on the following screen. In doing so, you'll be asked to pick a format. You can leave VDI (VirtualBox's own format) selected unless you want to run the VM with other virtualization software.

Unless you have a specific need for defining a fixed size virtual disk - unlikely if you're reading this guide - you're fine with a dynamically allocated disk. This will expand your virtual disk as the virtual machine needs additional space instead of starting at the larger size.

By default, the virtual disk will be created in C:UsersUSERNAMEVirtualBox VMs. If your C: drive is short on space or if you simply want the VM stored elsewhere, you can set it now. My C: drive is an 80GB SSD, so I'm creating the virtual disk on a secondary HDD.

It can't hurt to glance over the settings summary before you proceed, but seemingly anything can be changed later. If you're satisfied, click Create. Assuming you weren't met with any errors, you just created a virtual machine -- albeit one without an operating system.

Wait. What about Windows 8?

You're only moments away from installing Windows 8. Right click your new VM and open Settings. In the left column, click Storage > Empty (under IDE Controller) > the CD/DVD icon (under Attributes) > Virtual CD/DVD disk file and navigate to the Windows 8 ISO.

Once you see the Windows 8 ISO attached under the IDE Controller, click OK to exit Settings. Now you should be able to launch your virtual machine and begin a standard Windows installation. If you're familiar with that, you shouldn't need this guide any further.

You'll be prompted to set your language, time and currency format, and input method. You'll also have to supply a product key (DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J). Agree to the terms, choose a Custom setup and install Windows 8 to the only unallocated space.

The installation took about 20 minutes on my system. You'll eventually be asked to choose an interface color, a PC name and other such customizations. After playing a round of Twenty Questions, setup should complete and you'll see the Windows 8 desktop.

Son of a... this won't work!

If you meet the minimum system requirements, you shouldn't encounter any issues. It's worth noting that while your processor might support virtualization, the feature could be disabled in your system BIOS. Feel free to seek help in the comments .

I haven't had any performance issues running Windows 8 with a single CPU core, but you can dedicate more cores in the VM settings window (System > Processor). Likewise, you can allocate more VRAM, tweak the network adapter and configure shared folders.

Fix Windows 7 SP1 ‘Error 633’ and Failed Dial-up Connections

Customers running Windows 7 RTM and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) can have issues establishing a dial-up connection after they wake their computers from sleep or hibernation. 
Microsoft has officially confirmed the issue, and published KB 2618301, offering additional details to users impacted by this problem. 

According to the software giant, in addition to Windows 7 RTM and SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM and SP1 are also affected. 

Here is how Microsoft describes the symptoms encountered by customers:

“When you resume a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 from sleep or from hibernation, you cannot establish a dial-up connection through a modem. 

Additionally, you may receive the following error message: Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.”

There’s a simple fix to take care of this issue, but it’s a temporary solution. Customers can restart their computers as a workaround. Alternatively, they can reset the modem they’re using before trying to establish the dial-up connection.

The Redmond company already identified the source of the problem, explaining that:

“This issue occurs because a flag is not reset after the device state is cleaned up when the computer is put to sleep or into hibernation. Therefore, the flag is in an inconsistent state when you resume the computer.

The flag is set when the computer is put to sleep or into hibernation. The flag indicates that the states of various internal structures for the modem device have to be cleaned up.”

An update designed to resolve the problem described in this article is already available from Microsoft.

In win. 98, Me, 2000, often a software is used to burn a CD, but Windows XP comes with a builtin CD copy feature. If you are using a system which has not any burning software don’t worry. With the help of windows XP feature, you can write some data or any music files to a CD/DVD or erase it also.

 Main Requirement.

Before you erase or write a CD you need to enable the CD-R features n windows XP. For this purpose:

• Double click on “My Computer”
• Right click on CD Drive and select “Properties”.
• Select the last option “Recording”
• Select by clicking “Enable CD recording on this drive”
• Also select Fastest for quick writing speed.
• And at last click “Ok”
• You’re done. Now the windows XP is ready to write or erase any CD/DVD.

Method to Format the Disk.  

You are using the CD for writing purpose, make sure that disk is blank. You might need to format it before use. For this purpose

• Insert a Rewritable CD/DVD into the drive.
• Double click on “My Computer”
• Open CD-Rom drive.
• Windows opens that shows the contents of the CD, on the left panel click on the menu. “Erase this CD-RW”.
• On the windows “CD writing wizard” click “Next”
• The wizard starts to erase or format the CD.
• After complete process, the wizard will disappear.
• You should confirm that windows don’t show any files on the CD,
• It is complete now. You’re done.

Method to Burn a CD on XP without any software.  

• At first insert a formatted CD (CD-R) disc into the CD drive.
• Double click on “My Computer”
• Select the files & folders and press “Ctrl + c” to copy.
• Double click on CD Rom drive and press “Ctrl + v” to paste.
• You will see as temporary files/folders at this time.
• Select “Write these files to CD” on the left panel.
•  The window “CD Writing Wizard” appears.
• Window shows default name of CD but you can change the CD name if you wish, then click “Next”
• The “CD Writing Wizard” starts to write files to the CD.

After the successful completion of the CD Writing process, the wizard will disappear and the CD Rom ejects CD automatically.

To do this go to Logging and click on CONCATENATE LOGS Choose all the files that have been saved in your specified folder and Concatenate them .Now you will have one .ncf file .

Step 8 : (Converting .ncf to .cap ) : Now that you have one file with all the packets you need to Convert it into .cap file for AIRCRACK to crack .

Click on File->Log Viewer->Load Commview Logs-> Choose the .ncf file. Now File->Export->Wireshark/TCP dump format .

Aircrack Part :Now for the Second Part Cracking this is very simple . Just open the Aircrack Folder->Bin->Aircrack-ng GUI.exe Choose the .cap file and you should be able to do the others .
