What laptop should you buy? part 1

LAPTOP shopping is always a difficult task. They come by so many different names these days, Chromebooks, Ultrabooks, Zenbooks, Notebooks, Macbooks, it's all pretty confusing.
we have put together a list of some of the best laptops on the market to help your decision making process a little easier.
Please note there are a ton of great laptops on the market that didn't make this list, that doesn't mean they shouldn't be considered. There are just only so many computers you can fit into one story.
WHAT'S A CHROMEBOOK?
A Chromebook is a laptop brought to you buy the good people at Google and comes in eight different models that come from Acer, Samsung, HP and Google.
It runs on an operating system that is basically adapted from Google's own Chrome browser. These devices are making waves for its blurring of the boundaries between browser and desktop. Features like YouTube can run independent of the Chrome browser and it also supports offline browsing.
Upside: The low-end Chromebooks are incredibly lightweight, so much so you can carry them in a handbag all day without any strain.
With the exception of a few models, Chromebooks are mostly housed in plastic which gives them a sort of flimsy feeling but they're sturdy and you don't have to be as worried about fragile parts shattering or breaking off.
Prices start from $199 and go all the way up to $1299 - still a darn site cheaper than any Apple computer. They're also a lot cheaper than a lot of other laptops on the market.
Downside: The Chromebook may not be the device of choice for the paranoid. You have to login to your Google account to even begin using this computer. Google - as we already know - tracks the content of your inbox in order to deliver you targeted advertising. It's also been in hot water over allegedly sharing information with the NSA. If you're concerned about having your activity tracked, this probably isn't the device for you.
High end: The Chromebook Pixel
Price: $1299

Chromebook Pixel
Upside: The Chromebook Pixel has a stunning display with an insane resolution of 1560 x 1700 which is higher than even what the Macbook Pro offers. While you can only choose between 32 or 64GB of internal storage, all Chromebook Pixel users are given a Terabyte of cloud storage in Google Drive. The experience is smooth, fast and totally seamless. Hardware and performance wise it stands up against almost every rival on the market including the Macbook Pro or Windows OS.
It's all metal body and lack of tapering makes the Pixel one damn sturdy computer. It looks big. It feels big. It's probably more suited to people who don't do a lot of travel or need to take their laptop from place to place. This baby is too bulky to be carried around full-time.
It sports a touchscreen display so you can choose whether to scroll using the track pad or control the activity on screen with your fingers. You can select apps by tapping on the screen, or you can click the track pad - whichever you feel more comfortable with.
The Chromebook includes a range of customised functions buttons that sit above the keyboard which let you change things like brightness, a refresh button, and the ability to switch between browsers. The capslock button has also been replaced with a search key.
Downside: Most of the apps that run on this computer are web based and not optimised for touch yet - though Google has said that many of these missing features will be added to apps shortly - so you might find yourself relying more on traditional touchpad scrolling and clicking for apps. Switching between apps is also difficult.
While video streaming on sites like YouTube is seamless, playing videos that are saved to the device can be stutters at times. The computer can handle about five hours of active use before needing a recharge, which is slightly less than its Apple or Microsoft rivals.
$1299 is also a lot to play for a laptop that is basically designed for web browsing. If you regularly play video games, use video or photo editing software or word processing programs, this isn't the computer for you.
Low end: Acer C7 Chromebook
Price: $349
Acer C7 Notebook
Acer C7 Notebook Source: Supplied
Upside: Its 1366 x 768 resolution is standard for most laptops in its range. Its display is sharp and unless you're super up close imperfections are difficult to notice. Comes with a headphone jack, power adaptor port, an ethernet port, three USB ports, a VGI and HDMI port to enable you to connect to an external display, and a full-size SD card slot.
Like other Chromebook models the C7 has a bunch of function keys that sit above the keyboard that allow you to control brightness, video and music playback, refresh and go forward and back in the browser.
It also features a touch screen so you can choose between hands-on interaction or a more traditional trackpad, point and click experience. The Acer C7 Chromebook sports 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive, powered by a 1.1GHz chip. It sports between 4.5-5 hours of battery life. Also, did we mention it's $349?
Downside: The Acer is not the prettiest of the Chromebook range. It's all plastic body makes everything feel like it can bend, stretch or break. It's a pretty uninspired design and it's parts are a bit clunky. The hinge sticks out behind the base like it's about to come off. But obviously for a Chromebook that costs $200, you're obviously going to have to make some sacrifices on design.
The screen isn't very bright and the black bezel is glossy and reflective, it can be a bit distracting. The trackpad can be jolty at times and the cursor tends to jump around the screen. Like most of the Chromebook models they're designed mostly for web browsing. Those requiring processing power to run editing or word processing software will be left wanting. Tends to get hot when it runs absolutely anything.

WHAT'S A MACBOOK?
A Macbook is a laptop produced by Apple.
High end: Macbook Pro 15-inch
Price: Starting at $1349
Macbook Pro
Macbook Pro Source: Supplied
Upside: At 1280 x 1800 pixels the full HD resolution of the Macbook Pro 15-inch is the most powerful of the Mac range. (The 17 inch used to hold the top gong but it was recently quietly discontinued by Apple). The resolution is not quite as amazing as the Retina Pro iPad but it's the closest any in the range come to it.
If you're a photo editor, graphic designer, video editor this is the computer for you (that is if you really want to work on a laptop and not a desktop computer like the iMac - which, for the sake of your eyes, back and posture, we don't recommend).
The base model starts with a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with a GeForce GT 650M, 8GB RAM, and flash storage that ranges from 256GB to 768GB, this laptop is great for gamers who will appreciate how the graphic chip set brings out their special affects. This isn't the most powerful gaming machine on the market but it's certainly up there and is capable of delivering amazing special affects and smooth playing at 24-30 FPS.
The 15 inch is a lot quieter than past models. And its flash storage makes it a much faster machine. The computer boots almost instantly and it transitions from sleep to wake even faster. The firewire and ethernet ports have been replaced with a thunderbolt port, two USB 3 ports, and an HDMI out port.
Downside: Though Apple claims the model is a lot cooler than past models but the machine is still hot to touch due to its massive processing power and apps. With prices between $1,349 and $3,199 for the Retina Pro model, it's the most expensive laptop in the Apple range and in the market.
Low end: Macbook air
Price: Starts at $1099
Macbook Air
Macbook Air Source: Supplied
Upside: This is the freelancer's computer of choice. It has CRAZY battery life which can last up to 12 hours. You know what that means: portable office. Relocate your office to the nearest coffee shop and annoy all the wait staff. Just remember to keep ordering coffee or you'll likely be asked to leave.
It also boasts faster wi-fi speeds than previous models and improved graphics. It contains two USB ports, a thunderbolt port and SDXC card slot. Claims three times faster wi-fi than previous models but will depend on whether you're using a compatible router. (Apple routers cost $249). This computer is for normal people looking for all the regular things a laptop delivers like word processing, the ability to browse the web and run apps. It contains a 1.3Ghz core i5 processor, 128GB storage (an upgrade of 256GB more costs $200) and Apple claims it has 40 per cent better graphics that previous models.
Downside: If you're still the kind of person that buys CDs or DVDs, this computer isn't for you. The Macbook Air has no CD drive, though you can buy an external one that plugs in via USB but it'll cost you $99. It contains a Macsafe 2 power socket which means if you're upgrading from other models you'll also need to buy a new adaptor.
It contains a 720p Facetime front facing camera and a 1440 x 900 display - pretty average compared to its Windows and Chrome competitors - even against other Apple Macbook Pros. The air is definitely not a gaming computer, on the upside it handles the graphics reasonably well, but it does cause the computer to become very hot. This is also not the computer you'd use for any high end or professional photography or video work. The Air just doesn't have the processing power to run those kinds of programs.

WHAT'S AN ULTRABOOK?
An Ultrabook is a high-end laptop range released by Intel which are designed to massively reduce weight and bulk without compromising on battery life and performance.
High end: Fujitsu Lifebook U772
Price: $3079
Lifebook
Lifebook Source: Supplied
Upside: This low cost laptop holds six hours of battery life, weighs 2.4kgs and features a dual core processor. It contains 2 USB ports and an HDMI and VGA port. Contains a DVD + RW optical drive and a resolution of 1366 x 768. It costs $499.
Downside: Only contains 4GB of RAM, this isn't exactly the kind of computer you're going to be able to store a lot of music or movies on. Future models will have 3G and LTE capability but sadly this is not available in the current model. It's also damn pricey, costing $3079.
Low end: Asus S56
Price: $765
Asus S56
Asus S56 Source: Supplied
Upside: Slim design, fast boot times, runs i5 processor which consumes only 17W of power which will help with battery life. Features 6GB of RAM running at 1600 MHz and it boots and wakes up quickly. Durable, it is made out of aluminium and plastic. Features an Ethernet port. Features three USB ports, a VGA, HDMI port and Ethernet jack and a CD/DVD drive.
Downside: The s56's HD 4000 graphics, this is not a computer for hardcore gamers. It's resolution of 1366 x 768 and glossy screen makes glare and reflection a bit of an issue, making this better suited as an indoor computer.

AT&T Adds Live U-verse TV Streaming to iPad and iPhone Apps

Cable companies are scrambling to convince customers to continue paying for cable TV in the age of the internet, even going so far as to endanger long-standing relationships with broadcasters who don't want additional online streaming competition. AT&T has apparently thrown caution to the wind and updated its iPad and iPhone U-verse apps with free streaming of live TV at home or away.
This isn't the ultimate solution to your mobile TV woes, but it's getting close. When you're at home, the app will stream all subscribed channels (with limited exceptions), but some won't be available when you're away from home, or using mobile data. Basically, the stream has to be going through your AT&T U-verse internet connection. You could probably even rig up a VPN of some sort to access your home network on the go for more channels.
The app's new live channel guide will let you peruse the available streaming options so you're not surprised when something isn't available. Also be aware the content restrictions will vary by area—the local stations often aren't available. The iPhone version of the app also has some additional improvements including higher-resolution graphics. It's not as exciting as live TV streaming, but it's something.
Both the iPad and iPhone can still control DVRs and manage recordings from the app, but there's not currently a way to stream recorded content to the device. The update also didn't change the UI to match the new iOS 7 aesthetic. Still, the apps are free and the functionality really makes them worth using.

Moto X is the best Android phone

Sure, there are other phones with better looks, screens and speed. But the Moto X handles ordinary day-to-day smartphone tasks just as well as any competitor. And the battery will get you through an impressive one to two days of legitimate smartphone use, which only a few other phones can claim.
It's the little details of the Moto X that really make a huge difference, separating Google's first Motorola smartphone from its competitors.
The phone has a curved back to fit nicely into the hand, but there's a little dimple in the curve so the phone doesn't wobble when placed on a table. The notification screen shows you new emails, calls and texts without turning the whole screen on -- and without unlocking the phone.
Inside America's first smartphone factory
The most amazing thing about the Moto X: It has a 4.7-inch screen, but it feels like you're holding a phone with a much smaller one. Motorola was nearly able to eliminate the side bezels entirely, while making the top and bottom of the phone as compact as humanly possible. It's arguably the most perfectly sized phone, striking a balance between screen size, pocketability, and one-handed usability. By comparison, the screen on the HTC One has the same dimensions, but the phone looks and feels noticeably larger.
Strangely enough, it's Google's biggest claims about the Moto X that don't live up to the hype.

Adobe says hackers accessed data for 2.9 million customers

Adobe Systems said Thursday that hackers had accessed personal data for nearly 3 million of its customers.

Brad Arkin, Adobe's chief security officer, wrote in a blog post that the hackers had removed data including encrypted credit- and debit-card numbers, but that the company does not believe any decrypted numbers were taken.
The attackers "removed from our systems certain information relating to 2.9 million Adobe (ADBE) customers, including customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and other information relating to customer orders," Arkin wrote. The company is in the process of notifying customers whose card information was involved in the incident, and is resetting the relevant customer passwords.

The hackers also took source code for a number of Adobe products, Arkin said.
"We're working diligently internally, as well as with external partners and law enforcement, to address the incident," he wrote.
Brian Krebs, author of the respected security blog Krebs on Security, wrote that the attackers appeared to be the same group responsible for attacks earlier this year on data aggregators LexisNexis, Kroll and Dun & Bradstreet.

Samsung on track for record profit as HTC stumbles

samsung
South Korea-based Samsung said it would report operating profit of $9.2 billion to $9.6 billion for the third quarter -- which works out to a minimum increase of 23% over the same period last year. The performance is a new record -- higher even than the $7 billion profit posted in the second quarter.
Third-quarter sales were also higher than last year, rising a minimum of 11% to around $54 billion.
Samsung shares advanced about 1% after the earnings guidance was released, but it wasn't enough to erase longer-term losses. Since the end of May, Samsung shares have lost 7% of their value amid concerns over slowing smartphone sales.
The pressure on Samsung shares is part of an industry-wide trend driven by declining margins and possible saturation in the smartphone business. While Samsung can rely on other parts of its business including semiconductors and other technology to buffet losses, competing phone makers haven't been so lucky.

Taiwan-based HTC is another hard-hit victim of the trend. The company said Friday that it lost $100 million in the third quarter, a number that was significantly worse than analysts had expected.
Though analysts say HTC's smartphone One has sold admirably, it hasn't stopped the company from continuing its downward spiral.
Samsung is scheduled to deliver final earnings results for the third quarter at the end of October. To top of page

Things to check when the content is not visible in the Nokia Store

There are cases where you don’t see the content that you submit to Nokia Publish on the Nokia Store. You would want to check the following:
1) Your content has not been published.
Steps to identify the issue:
A. Check if your item has passed QA
If your application (both metadata and files) has not passed the QA review, it will remain unpublished. For the initial publishing process, the QA team requires the metadata and at least one file to pass the QA process in order to be published.
The QA overview shows the QA status of the latest revision. If the QA overview shows the following, this means that the latest revision has been published in the store:
The above status indicates that your application has passed several or all devices, countries, or language listed in your distribution. If either the item or files show “Failed”, this means that none of the parameters set in the distribution has passed QA and this revision will not be published in the store.
B. Check the publication status
Once a revision has been processed by the QA team and passed, it will be published to the Nokia Store and the publication status will show as follows:
C. Check the Publication Tab
Additionally, the publication tab must indicate that the latest revision is successfully published to the Nokia Store. Published files should correspond with the time-stamp.
If you do not see a time-stamp with your published file or if the file does not appear in the publication tab, this indicates that your application has not successfully been published. If this is a case, please contact the Nokia Publish Support with your content item name and publisher name to get your item re-exported.
2) Your content is being distributed to regions that are outside of your search parameters OR your content has been failed in certain countries, device, or language and hence is not being distributed within these distribution parameters.
Even if the QA status of your content shows “Passed”, this may not necessarily mean that all the devices, country, and language you had set for the distribution has passed the QA review. You can identify which device, country or language had failed QA by clicking on “Show QA details”. The issues found on your application for the failed settings are found at the bottom of the content file page.
You will need to fix the issues highlighted by the QA team and resubmit your application once more in order for these settings to be passed.
3) The Start-date of your content’s metadata is set at a later date.
Ensure that the start-date of your content’s metadata is not set to a later date. Your content will only be visible to users on the date set in that field. If this is the case, please change the start-date and resubmit your item for re-publishing.
4) The End-date of your content’s metadata has been set to an earlier date.
If your content has already been published and suddenly becomes invisible in the Nokia Store, this may be due to the published period reaching the End-date set in the metadata. This is likely caused by an expired signing certificate. If this is the case, please resign your application with a new certificate and resubmit your application for publishing.
If all the above do not apply to your content item, please contact the Nokia Publish support through the Contact Us page and provide your publisher name and content item name so we can investigate further and restore your content’s visibility.

Oops! BlackBerry even worse off than it thought

More bad news for BlackBerry. The smartphone company said Wednesday that its business is in even worse shape than what it reported just a few weeks ago.

BlackBerry (BBRY) said the 4,500 employees it is laying off by the end of the year will cost $400 million -- four times as much as the company had previously expected. That's particularly bad news, since BlackBerry is racking up giant quarterly losses and rapidly burning through its cash.
The company is also quickly losing its appeal in key markets. BlackBerry said Wednesday that customers in typically loyal international markets are switching allegiances to Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android devices.
BlackBerry also said consumers are looking for devices with the largest number of apps. That's definitely not BlackBerry's forte.
Making matters even worse, BlackBerry said that its core base of corporate customers are also now looking towards greener pastures. Long delays in the BlackBerry 10 platform have angered corporate IT departments, which like to deploy new BlackBerry phones and software together.
How BlackBerry fell so fast
How BlackBerry fell so fast
Many business professionals have been demanding Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPhones and Android devices for years. But BlackBerry said it was surprised by the rate at which it is losing support from corporate customers.
The company also said that uncertainty surrounding its ongoing "strategic review" impacted demand for BlackBerry smartphones -- something that should impact sales to an even greater extent now that the company has announced plans to go private.
Yet shares of BlackBerry rose more than 1% on Wednesday after The Wall Street Journal reported that private equity firm Cerberus might be interested in buying the company. Shares had previously been down by as much as 5%.
Wednesday's financial release was an update to its latest quarterly report on Friday. BlackBerry announced a $965 million quarterly loss, which included a $934 million charge for unsold BlackBerry Z10 devices, the first phone launched on the new BlackBerry 10 operating system.
BlackBerry said it delayed the full report of its numbers due to its ongoing negotiations to be taken private by Fairfax Financial, a Canadian insurance company. To top of page

Facebook Graph Search now finds comments, status updates

Facebook announced an update to Graph Search on Monday that will enable users to search for conversation topics within status updates, comments and posts. Some users with Graph Search can now browse Facebook for topics of interest — for example, "posts about Facebook announced an update to Graph Search on Monday that will enable users to search for conversation topics within status updates, comments and posts. Some users with Graph Search can now browse Facebook for topics of interest — for example, "posts about Breaking Bad" or simply "Breaking Bad."
The update also allows users to search for posts or comments from a certain time period or location (for example, "posts by my friends from last month") or posts that they already composed or commented on.
The update makes Facebook much more conducive to real-time conversations, an area where it has been making major strides to compete with the likes of Twitter. The two social networks have been competing for eyeballs during primetime television events like the Emmys, the NFL's Monday Night Football, and Sunday's Breaking Bad finale.
When users' eyes aren't glued to the TV screen, Facebook and Twitter want them to be having conversations or voicing their opinions on their respective networks.
Opening up Graph Search to enable post and comment searches will help Facebook to do so. When a user logs into his profile during a primetime event, he can quickly scan all conversations about the game or his favorite show — even if he isn't near the top of the News Feed. If a user want to talk about an event hours (or even days) later, he can search for all relevant conversations on Facebook, something users can't easily do using Twitter.
Facebook has been working to add partnerships around live media in an attempt to fuel this social conversation. Earlier this month, the social network announced a content deal with FOX Sports to promote Facebook data and conversations alongside live NFL and college football broadcasts. Facebook has also added features like searchable hashtags and verified accounts in an attempt to make finding topics of interest easier on the platform.
Facebook reported on its Q2 earnings call that 88 to 100 million people are actively using the social network during primetime television hours — a number that Facebook advertisers will pay close attention to.
Twitter is making similar efforts ahead of the company's IPO; the company is expected to file its public IPO papers as soon as this week. Just last week, Twitter announced ad partnerships with both CBS and the NFL, which will bring real-time video into your Twitter stream.
Facebook's search update is not yet available to all Graph Search users, according to a company spokesperson. It will be tested starting on Monday with a small group of users and will roll out more expansively after that. Users will only be able to search for content that has been shared with them, in addition to public posts. In other words, your conversations should not appear in a search run by someone outside of your network unless your comments and posts are public.

Google Glasses: Specs And Other Details

The Google Glasses, which have a five megapixel camera and voice-activated controls, have started to be shipped.
The first devices will go to developers and “Glass Explorers”. Google held a competition earlier this year inviting potential users to come up with ways to use the device, while developers have been eager to be among the first to try out the technology.
Developers working on apps for Google’s smart glasses have been told they will not be allowed to place advertising within the device’s display. The newly-published terms and conditions for developers working on Glass also prohibit companies charging for apps.
According to several sources, those in the Glass Explorer Program are now receiving email notifications about device shipments, while Google also posted the technical specifications of the device for the first time.

Website maps 1.2 billion Facebook faces

Facebook has so many users -- more than a billion, or roughly the population of India -- that squeezing them all into one Web page seems almost impossible.
And yet someone has done just that.
A new project, "The Faces of Facebook" collects more than 1.27 billion Facebook profile photos on one site, arranged in chronological order according to when the person joined the social network. Users can sign in via Facebook to pinpoint their photo on the page and see where they show up in relation to their friends.
At first glance, the site looks like colorful, pixelated white noise. But users can zoom in to see individual photos and then scroll around or click on a photo to visit that person's Facebook page. (Be warned, however: the page is experiencing heavy traffic and can be slow and buggy.)
The site launched last week and was built by Natalia Rojas, a self-described "creative technologist" in Barcelona, Spain.
"I was playing around with Facebook API, and I discovered that there is a way to access everyone's public information with a very simple (but not obvious) algorithm".At that time, I thought I could do something beautiful/interesting with that, like showing them all together. Then I started to write the code to achieve it."
Rojas said she is not breaking Facebook privacy rules because she is not storing anyone's name, photo or private information -- just linking out to public Facebook profiles. She also said she hasn't heard from the social network, which she thinks is good news because "I was a bit worried about things like using their name in the URL."
Rojas said it took her a year and a half to code the site. The hardest part, she said, was stripping out the default silhouette images that appear on some inactive Facebook profiles.
Asked about her hopes for the project, Rojas said she was inspired by the idea that each Facebook profile photo is an example of that person's best self, and that millions of those images together combine to present a positive, universal message.
"There is a mix of people from all over the world. And somehow we are all telling our friends: 'Look, this is me, when I like myself.' Feeling happy, being creative, looking good, being passionate about something, proud of something, enjoying the life," she said.
"So I think, why don't we try to BE our Facebook profile picture? Even if life is difficult some times, there is always a way for us to be what we want to be happy."
